Certification Update August 2019

Jennifer Lange, SHRM-CP Director of Certification

New! Policy Changes to SHRM Recertification

SHRM formally announced via email several enhancements to the SHRM Recertification process for those with an existing SHRM Certification. A brief recap:

Earn PDCs During the Grace Period, effective August 1, 2019. SHRM Certification holders who are working toward recertification can earn PDCs for activities they participate in through their grace period (the 60-day period between their certification end date and expiration date).

Immediately begin earning PDCs for the new recertification cycle when you recertify early, effective August 1, 2019. The new recertification cycle for SHRM Certification holders who recertify early will begin the next day after they recertify. Their end date will continue to be on the last day of their birth month.

Carry over a maximum of 20 credits to the next recertification cycle, effective August 1, 2019. SHRM Certification holders who recertify with more than 60 PDCs in their account will be able to carry over up to 20 credits to their new cycle.

For more information, see SHRM’s announcement email from July 29.

Enhanced Chapter Support – SHRM Recertification

It’s back for 2019, but 2019 will be the LAST year! Help your local chapter and our HR Indiana State Council by recertifying your SHRM Certification in 2019. SHRM is offering enhanced financial support to those SHRM Chapters and State Councils in good standing based on the number of SHRM members who recertify between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019.

  • Chapters will receive $20 per chapter member who is a SHRM member in good standing, primarily coded to the chapter and is recertified for SHRM Certification during 2019.
  • State Councils will receive $10 per SHRM member in good standing (in-chapter and at-large) in the state who recertifies for SHRM Certification during 2019.

Payment will be made to affiliates in good standing in early 2020 based on the number of recertified members meeting the above criteria as of 12/31/19.

Hosting a Fall SHRM Certification Chapter Study Group?

Please let Jen Lange know if your chapter is planning or hosting a fall SHRM Certification (SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP) study group. It can be either a study group that the chapter runs or one in which you partner with a recognized local education partner like a college or university.

I would love to share the specifics of what your chapter is doing with those who make inquiries via the HR Indiana State Council so we can begin referring people your way. We can share information in a handout at the HR Indiana Conference August 12 – 14 as well!

Also, if you are thinking about trying to get a chapter study group going for this fall, I would be happy to assist you and share some best practices. As always, please let me know how I may be able to assist you, your chapter, or your membership with SHRM Certification efforts!

Further, SHRM created the SHRM Certification resources and tools to help you promote SHRM Certification preparation, SHRM Certification and Recertification. Learn how your chapter can partner with a SHRM Education Partner to host an instructor-led certification prep course or host and administer a facilitator-led SHRM Learning System study group. Tools are available here.

Remember, if your chapter is planning on hosting a SHRM Certification study group, the 2019 SHRM Learning System is available with some deeply discounted prices through the Holmes Corporation. Our Indiana contact is Alison Costello, 651-905-2654. If you have any issues/concerns, please reach out to Jen Lange and we can work though it (i.e. the minimum order requirement, etc.)

Accelerate Your HR Career with SHRM’s Competency Self-Assessment

SHRM has launched new member-only career resource that can help fast-track your HR career development with easy-to-use tools that assess your HR skills and competencies and guide you toward further training and development. There are three easy steps that will get you on your way to becoming the best HR professional you can be! First, Competency Self-Assessment, then Development Activity Wizard, and finally, Competency Development Plan. Learn more about this new benefit and how to accelerate your career.

NOTE – If you are a SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certified member, you will receive one PDC per year for each calendar year you complete the Competency Self-Assessment. Use it to evaluate how best to target your professional development efforts toward the 60 PDCs required to maintain your SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP credential over your three (3) year recertification period.

Another Way to Earn PDCs

Remember, your annual National SHRM Membership qualifies for three PDCs per year. SHRM automatically loads this in your SHRM Portal. Also, SHRM professional memberships can be renewed with a $20 discount using the code STATE20 through 12-31-19.

Need a Chapter Programming Idea? SHRM Offers Competency-Based Education for Chapters

Check out SHRM’s Competency-Based Education for Chapters. You will see two 1.5 hour programs to address topics based on the SHRM HR Competency Model. This is free of charge for SHRM Chapters and Councils in good standing. It’s a multimedia presentation, includes easy-to-use facilitator guides and is accessible via the VLRC.
Note: SHRM will need a five day lead window to approve the request to use it.

Specialty Credentials for HR Pros

Check out SHRM’s newest Specialty Credential tool. A SHRM Specialty Credential educates individuals on specific learning objectives. This is done by participating in a series of learning events and passing an assessment to demonstrate comprehension of program learning objectives. You cannot recertify a specialty credential; after three years, you must complete the learning events and pass the assessment to earn a new credential. Please spread the word!
